I have a 94 mx-6 lx with the 2.5 liter v6 5 speed.I was driving down the interstate and had the cruse control set at 75mph.When the car just died and smoke started boiling out from under the hood. When I pulled over and opened the hood coolant started coming up out of the overflow jug.I let the car set for a bit to cool and checked the coolant level.I happened to have a gallon of water to fill it back up.So I tryed to start it and the engine wouldn't turn.I thought it had locked up but when I went back to get it,it started up but sounded like a sick lawn mower. It seems to be running on only a few cylinders.I have checked the timing belts. They look fine.I have also checked to see if it was a head gasket that had blown. They also seem to be fine.I am at a loss.Any help would be welcome.

compression test is key cause you could have blown a head gasket. this is what i think happened cause it has happened to me. your thermostat took a big shit and the engine overheated cause coolant is now not flowing through your radiator. that is one possibility. the car didnt start back up right away because it is the computer keeping the car from running so hot. it most likely sounds like "a sick lawn mower" cause of blown head gasket from getting too hot.
