A flush, and a change of oil and filter (only use a genuine Mazda one) normally does the trick..

replacement is expensive, but I have read of people taking them out and cleaning them.

They work like two tin cans, open at one end.. one just slightly larger and sliding over the other so you have a sealed unit..
At one end is a one way valve, just a small hole with a sprung loaded ball bearing to seal it. any dirt in there, and the valve won't seal, and the HLA won't pump up properly. this gives enough clearence to make the telltale ticking noise.
