Im a P Plater OK for 3 more months. (No Puns please!) Any way I might like to bring this up for other P Platers here in OZ.
I was watching the news today and well apparently there might be a new law that restricts us to cars 125kw per tonne and under unless its used for work or if its the only family car.

Now I know that our 6's are 108kw (98RON yeah?) so that keeps us in the clear. What do you guys rekon? I personly dont care now because I have a few months left.

i peronsally dont see how a max power limit on a car can force someone to slow down...it will just take longer to hit top speed in say a camry then a GTR...if someone really isintent in going fast, they will do so in whatever car they have.

p.s. i have 1 year left of my green P's and if anything, i appreciate the speed (or capability of the speed) of my 6. whereas when i drove the camry around, i didnt give a **** and drove faster than i do now in my 6.

i think it kinda sucks.. like i have been off my p's for a few years now but there is no point in limiting so many different things for p platers like drinking and speed limits and the type of car coz eventually they are going to do those things.. and its then a novelty to do it if you know what i mean... like ofcourse drinking is a bit different but they gotta give you these rights gradually or something other wise by the time they get off their p plates they just go crazy which would have its side effects - possibily worse than if they did nothing to begin with coz they have brought attention to it!! Thats what i think anyways!!!

if there is somwthing fu*ked up in this country is the road works.
they dig the roads, and leave them like that for bloody moths, there a 10 cm drop. then when they fill them up they are 10cm high, man i hate that, feels like the car is gonna break (and some1 gets fuc*ing sued, ) (you can actualy do that ,). you hit a pothole break your wheel, you go to the council you wait 6 moths and they might tell you where to go or you might be lucky.

Fuc*ing queensland roadworks, i wish some1 shoots them all,

carefactor =0 frm these bastards.

sory i swore a bit. but i realy had to tell some1.. :D

The idea is nice but then again
Think a VN-VS commy V6 is the biggest most easily stealable and cheapest to insure car- period. BUt they are the most wrapped around a pole i nthe wet car in the hands of a P-PLATER Along with 80's Falcons Xd to XF now more EA-ED and EL's.
All with similar triats.

The main problem is not major accidents, P-Platers keep having minor insurance cost little ones.
TRUST ME ON THIS Go to Campise IN Syndey the shopping center. it's dirty place - I admit. but there are so many P-platers but every car has one trait minor parking damage.
I even saw the best thing Young okay I will SAy it Asian Women on a up hill pretty steep wagon can sit it in the dry going up it being concreate. The women a Green -P -plater, Shoved the car somehow into reverse - thinking goign forwad and WHAM the Commys quick repsone went BAND into the car beind in about 500M cause 2 cars written off. This is what they hate and I hate.
There has to be about 1000 new people with new licences but they can't drive, All they did was PASS THE TEST.
Which is like School or Uni (dont' get ofended it's why they have training) but the aspects are the same Study to pass the test and you get a licence. teachers don't teach them how to drive they teach them how to pass. Especially Ethnic minorities, I love watching them neither can speack english well, neither can drive too well. This is the same for many young drivers. Many just learn the test, EG I'm getting lesson on how to drive - no your learnign how to pass the test. For God sake I floored it in the Wagon on my test heres 4500-5700rpm shift baby yeah droped it ot 1st gear form 3th. I still passed because it was controlled. (some 8itch didn't let me IN!) I admit the RTA guy did **** but he was impressed- especially the one handed reverse parking crap. Was so like I'm gona let you pass but like no need to give it so much throttle.

Power restirction is just like on a motor bike - I have no probelm- but it's too hard to police it's stupid.

What should occur it is RTA controlled Driver Learning schools, it's okay for parents to teach but RTA should make it everyone has to go to a RTA schooling for at least 5 leasons last leason is the test, but have to have BLAH BLAH ETC hours.
IN Other countrys it's in the high schools. Too many Blind teaching the Blind.
If you lvie in inner sydney or any part you proberly know what I mean, but be it imagrint or born right here, the amounth of people who only know gas and brake, red light green light and 2Dimension vision front and sides, is getting too scary.

What do you mean might be a law? For as long as I remember here in Victoria P-platers have always been restricted to:

a power-to-weight ratio of more than 125 kilowatts per tonne

or

a capacity-to-weight ratio of more than 3.5 litres per tonne

Well, I couldnt agree more with this law (if it does come in)... But it should be less than 125kW/T. Bottom line is, the more powerful the car, the quicker the blood rush you get and more likely you are to be driving/accelating too fast for urban roads.

My first car was an escort with a 13b twin turbo, that car was just goddamn dangerous in how fast it could go, an boardered on being leathal (almost litterally) with how quickly it could accellarate....

I dont care what you arguement is against this law, you are wrong. P platers and many 'open' licence holders do not have the co-ordination and mentality to not only safely control powerful vehicles, but have enough brain matter to realise that you a complete [email protected] wit for doing 100km/h in most 50 zones.

Dont get me wrong, I like driving quick as much as the next person... But there is a time and place for everything, and they way a minority of P platers drive ALL the time, this sort of law is truly just to avoid the damage we all SEE on the news every night. Its this minority who mean that we all have to pay way too much for insurance, it is this minority who create a stigma toward any under 25y/o male driving a 'performance' vehicle (probably is many ways just - but if we had tits or it was due to racial background - it would be illegal for them to do so).

At the end of the day, you cant put an old head on young shoulders, but you dont have to have a brain to drop your boot in, and cause (directly/indirectly) and accedent and/or injury.

Yes, you can do 150 in a 50 zone in a camry, but you less likely to be doing it than if you were in a car that got the addrenaline pumping just getting you to 70 due to acceleration....

BTW: perfect example of why this sort of law it a fair and reasonable law is the motorbike licencing system...

nuff sed

Have to agree with the law. There is too many idiots out there. The problem is, how would you enforce it?

Hasn't this been around on motorbikes for years?

yes true..but comeon, think about it...all the P Plater really has to do is take off their P Plates and they can drive any car they like. its not like cops are gonna go checking every car that is 126kw are they now?

there always has and alays will be reckless young drivers...the only way u can stop this(to a degree) is force the age of a learner's permit to be over 25. which we all know will never happen.

You dont have much to worry about really, because its 125kw/ tonne, not 125kw total. There is little chance that just an exhaust will bring it up to a suitable level to exceed 125kw/tonne. Whats a 2nd gen weight, assuming its 1300kg, thas an extra 35kw you need to find to exceed the limit.

Personally it doesnt bother me as I live in queensland and am not longer on my P's.

yes, this is correct.

i also agree with the law, but i think it shoudl be raised a little to maybe 130kw/tonne.

im pretty sure that 125kw/tonne rules out sr20det powered s13s - a very popular car with p platers.

the fines arent anything major though - $110 dollars i believe. its only breaking a condition of your licence.

its basically the same as not wearing your glasses when it is stated on your licence that u must, not displaying p plates, driving a manual on an auto licence etc etc.. although i think theres a new rule which stipulates that you lose 3 points in the process - not good.

also, the rule isnt widely enforced as it should be. i've seen p plates on series 6 rx7's, wrxs, evo 6, etc etc... apparently you cant drive an SS commo, but u can drive a clubby or something (because its heavier).

What about auto vs manual? A manual is gonna be quicker over the 1/4 mile so maybe manuals should have tighter restrictions?
100kW/tonne is plenty I reckon. My auto 2nd gen is plenty quick enough to get me in trouble (as it has), and it is nowhere near 125kw/tonne. Maybe they should ban P platers from any car faster than a 16 sec 1/4 mile or something.

thats quite ridiculous hehe...
i doubt the RTA or pigs will go around putting every car on a dyno to check if their factory kilowatts match the actual kilowats. kilowatts dont really mean anything anyway i think. its all about torque(i.e. acceleration) when it comes to inexperienced drivers losing it on the roads.

Well make it a limit of no faster than 0-100 in 7 or 8 secs or something...it's not going to catch those who mod their cars, but it will catch all the stockers out there.
