You don't give any indication where you found this part. Offhand, it looks like the part that sits on the power steering pump. It has a wire attached to it. Maybe the wire came off. If so, you should be able to find the wire still there.

That is the EGR modulator valve.

His car is a 1988 mx6 non turbo.
The valve is used on all 2.2L non turbo's.
