Probe, outside door handle difficult to open

995 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  4cylfun
So a few weeks ago, my outside door handle let go. After removing the door panel, I discovered the "metal" arm had in fact broken, and not just simply a plastic clip as I had expected.

Someone grabbed me a new handle from the local JY. After installation, I remembered/noticed it was somewhat difficult to open the door.

Is there anything I can lubricate to help the mechanism move more smoothly? I won't be able to find another black 1g PGT door handle again from that JY if/when this one breaks from the strain.

assuming its a 1gen, when you installed the handle did you clip the rod in correctly? if its too far down the threads you will have to pull it higher than normal to open it.

i also greased the hell out of the lock and everything that moved, that helped too.

The probe opens from the end of the door toward the front of the car. Not upward like an MX6.
oh yeah.....

try greasing things then aimlessly and see if there is any adjustments anywhere lol.
Handle broke again. Anyone know about the Probe mechanism? I haven't replaced it yet (a new one just arrived in the mail) but I'll have another look at where it links to see if I can lube or adjust something.
pop the door panel off and look in side easiet way.
Alright, the handle's replaced again. This time it broke slightly differently, but same general idea.

I noticed the bar which the handle pushes down on is threaded at the bottom where it goes in to a piece of plastic. I managed to get it to rotate around within the door without removing the latch assembly. Two full turns gave the handle a nice mid-pull open which more closely matches the passenger door.

I also sprayed down the moving parts with some WD.
those adjustment threads are annoying at times.

I know when i fixed my driver door it took me like 2 minutes to get it just perfect. As said, too far down it won' open enough, too far up and the door won't latch lol.

I'm pretty sure its like that on almost everycar. I remember working on a crown vic one day and its more or less the same idea. Threaded plastic collar and threaded rod.
The adjustment was pretty simple for me. Before touching it, I had to really pull the handle to it's limit for the door to open... which I think may have caused the handle's failure twice now. One turn moved the opening point to a little further out, but not much. The second turn put it right in the middle.

There really isn't much adjustment you can do. Probably 4 turns total and it's either no longer closing or can't open it. Because the pole isn't straight, you can't do a half turn or quarter turn... so your options are limited.
There's like 10 threads on the one i am using now. I think the collar itself has like 3 or 4 in it. There's not a whole lot but adjusting it too much can go a long way oddly enough.
