They work for the most part. Most cops nowadays have a thing called "instant on" which basically pings you. radar detectors really can't detect it, cuz the cops radar releases a burst without any notice. You radar detector will go bezerk, but by then it will be too late. Of course not all cops have this.
There are radar blockers available that give the cop an error essentially. They can't get an accurate reading, therefore can't justify pulling you over. They can be kinda pricey. Then again so can radar detectors, or worse yet, a ticket. God knows my radar detector has saved my @ss a few times.
Just make SURE it's legal in your state. There's a few states they're illegal in (Virginia, DC, and a few others) and if you get caught with one... BIG ticket. Also, as another member said, they don't always work-- but they help! I've been saved about 5 times now, by my Cobra. It's an older one, but a buddy of mine got it at a Police auction in a box of electronic stuff. He gave it to me for free since he got such a good deal on the box. I usually use it on the freeway, especially when I'm thinking of passing a group of cars meandering in the left lane.
yeah they have radar detectors, then there are radar detector DETECTORS that cops use to see if you have a radar detector. There's also scramblers that will make your car "Invisible" to radar they say. I don't know about this. But if a cop sees a car that if FLYING past other cars doing the speed limit, theyre gonna stop you.
I personaly have a COBRA, one of th eones with the voice prompts. it's pretty cool.. saved me a couple of times. had it for like 3 years now and it's still working fine.
If you do have one, try to reove it before the cop stops yuo. even though it may be legal in your state, cops hate that you try getting one over them.
one word valentine. They are the best they are kinda pricey though about 3-$400 check ebay but they will never let you down. or ..... Rocky mountain jammers, they jam police radar so thay cant read your speed. they are illegal, in my state, wisconsin radar detectors are legal so you dont get a ticket for having them , but if you dont want to get caught for sure go with valentine, escort, or possibly cobra.
I live in Texas thank god above...
Anyhow, everything's legal here but I really don't trust them. Maybe its just in texas, but since they know everyone or a lot of people have 'em, they usually just fall in behind you and clock you. Also, I've been in the car a few times where the cop waits till he see's you to tag you. My advice is that if you're gonna go that direction, mind the detector but don't rely on it or you'll get screwed. One plus though is look for a dector with a garuntee. Some will pay any ticket you get under 30 above the limit. Hell, I'd call that speeding insurance if you ask me. Just drive 99 mph in a 70 zone and send the bill to the company. That is until your insurance reams you. I also saw ads for a radar absorbing coat you put on your car.
Like I said though, all this advice comes from Texas and we have unique driving conditions. After all, I just got pulled over for doing 57 in a 20 in a school zone and the cop gave me a fu#king warning!
OY VEY!! You lucky sonofagun! I got an $81 ticket for 5 over the speed limit (65 in a 60 zone) on Interstate-75 in downtown Toledo. The cop was BSing me the whole time; he said he'd clockd me at 75. Whatever...
If I had the $$$, I'd proabably spring for a detector; however, I've found that the best insurance is often sticking to locally-controlled roads (no state highway, federal highway, or Interstate highway designations). Heck, I did double the speed limit down Strasburg Road (south of Monroe, MI) Tuesday when I was late for work and didn't see another car at all.
yeah, I have read about those Rocky Mountain Jammers. They seem cool. I got a fairly cheap detector, but by no means do I depend on it. Its just kinda there making noise kepping me alert. One time I got pulled over and the cop saw my cell phone charger and was giving me crap about how my radar detector dodn't work. He thought he was all cool until I pointed out that it was a cell phone charger. Hehe. That was before I got my detector.
I'm not sure about this but a buddy of mine told me the ticket in Canada for getting nailed with a detector is like 1200$. I really don't know if this is true but I use mine anyways and it has saved my arse numerous times. If I do get pulled over, I'll unhook it and shove it in my pocket or something cause they can search the car, but they can't search you without a warrant.
I know in the States they cannot search your car without your permission. They are allowed to look in teh windows, and if they see something in plain sight that shouldn't be there, then your in trouble. Then they can search you personally, because you will be arrested.
yea, but there has to be visible signs of something illegal, unless they say you have illegal substances on you...and search you for that or something and you get screwed because of that. But then you might be able to fight that or something...
p.s. Shouldn't this thread be in Electronics or something like that instead of kill stories?
