alright so im 16 and i just got my first speeding ticket. ouch. so if i get another one the penalties are a lot more severe and costly, and i dont want that to happen. so i have decided that with this entire next month without a license im going to use the money i save from work and invest in one of these radar detectors. if anybody has one, or knows anything about them let me know. What kind do you have, does it work well, any tickets with it. any help will be greatly appreciated (and karma will be given)!:jump:

I have played around with a few radar detectors and I have found that the only one that works well enough to depend on it and not just pray that it'll work would be the escort. Yeah it's close to 300 bucks but it's worth every penny. I bought a few radars and returned alot of radars. The escort is IMO the only one worth buying

16 and already gettin pulled over for speeding?! If you're going to speed, like we all are, know where and when to. Down Main St. in your 'hood isnt a good spot. I've been driving for 2 years and just recentrly (last week) got my first moving violation for not using blinkers 3x, $225!

i beleive they don't work!! well here at least!!

does the police use laser speed readers? if so then the detector won't detect it untill the cop as got ur speed!!! he fires the thing on u and boom gets ur speed and the detector warns u!!

if they use old radio frequencies then they should work ...

just don't speed on public roads, use a TRACK!!

#10 ·
no, no, no. no radars at all with all the technology cops have they get ur speed before you get a signal. the only way to go is a radar deflector, when the cop shoots the gun at ur car the signal comes back to the gun, well w/ a deflector it deflects it away from the gun. they run about 400 but im telling you they work

in addition to what everyone has said........ just drive like a normal human being............ speeding is the number one causes of car accidents..... -> injuries -> paralization -> death........

anyways, my buddy has a radar detector and we were driving up to syracuse from binghamton............

the cop was sitting in the middle........... and all of the sudden it started going off like crazy......... cops know that you have radar detectors, and rely on it too much...... so what they'll do is they'll sit there, and only start using the radar when your about 50 feet away, if your lucky your detector will go off, but its too late............

remember, most radars need a line of sight, so if a cop is around the corner, and you can't see him until you come from the turn, they'll get ya wether or not you have a detector or not...... (that's how i got my first ticket, and i didn't have a radar, and even if i did, i would've been screwed)

yeah and you wanna know what the fines are if your caught with one. Lets just say it's not double or triple digits. Dude like tyler said if your going to speed dont speed on main streets. Know the area in which you are speeding. And if your going to speed on the highway do it in the passing lane. I went by a state trooper on the Mass Pike going about 95 and I was in the passing lane and I noticed that he didn't clock me. He was clocking people in the right lane. But the best idea is not to speed. Granted I speed but I know where to do so. And when I do it I dont do like 60 in a 30 I do like 40 in a 30 or at the most 45 in a 30. Ya know what I'm saying hear. I never kept a radar because they dont work that well. It's just a waste of money and a radar jammer or deflector will get you totaly fucked.

Acually now that i'm thinking about it one guy at the meet the other week told me that one of the options on the 1st Gen MX6s was a radar detector that was located right around your knees. Only visible to the driver and that the signal detetor was mounted in the front bumper. Anyone else heard of this i think thats an awsome idea

That doesnt sound like an option anyone would ever put into car, let alone the fact that radar technology from that era wouldnt do you any good these days. It would be like still getting CB radios from the factory.

I am 19 and I have lost my lisence three times already. Actually its not so much the speeding, but I got royaly screwd the first time I got in trouble. I was in an accident that should have been avoided, but I guess old ladies are allowed to speed in town. This lady drives a brand new lincoln and she is always speeding and when I pulled out in my truck I thought I had time, except a kid ran out in front of me. So I stop wait and then go... only problem I was in the intersection and she wasn't paying attention
so she slams into my truck as I try desperately to get the hell outta there. I got introuble cuz I was the 15 year old so naturally MY FAULT! But oh well, I save a lot on gas and insurance money.... WAIT no i dont Ive paid enought to the state that I could have bout a whle nother car by now, no joke...... Moral of the story don't speed at all and when an officer pulls you out of the car and slams your dumb struck ass on the ground, don't move he just might pull his gun out and pistol whip you! lol that hurt but it was kinda funny.

Actually, they do work, and they don't have to be expensive. I have a cheapy $40 ( yeah forty ) one that I got at the Walmart. You would not believe how many times that thing has saved my lousy butt. It only works if the cops are using the old radio frequency radars, but thats what they are still using around here, so it helps. Most of the cops around here drive with the radar on too, so I usualy know they are out there before I get close.

Of course, the best solution is not to speed to begin with.

I have an old radar detector that my mom gave me, because she doesnt need it, as she never speeds. It probably doesnt work well anymore, but its saved me a couple times. I picked up a Statie that was sitting on the side of the road clocking people with his lights off about a mile and a half before I even saw him. Good thing too. I was doing 85 in a 50.

Im fairly certain that most radar detectors dont work, if not all. One time a cop explained it to me. He said that his radar can pick up cars speeding up to 3 miles, and that the radar detector only picks him up, after he already clocked me, and its too late, rendering it useless. He said that he already knows my speed and sees me long before I even know hes there.

Some of the rocket scientists in here can come in and tell me thats BS and he was lying, but he seemed like an honest and nice guy, and besides, you never know, so why take the chance now that someone told you how they work?

#19 ·
/\/\/\ yea he was lying to you, maybe the radar gun could tag from 3 miles away if you were the only thing on the road and it was a straight flat road, but if you cant see the cop he cant see you.... the only place you really need to worry about tickets is in town when you are driving past a side street or something where the cop just apears and you have no time to slow down. ....if your on the highway just stay attentive and when you see a cop slow down and stay close to other cars....i do alot of driving in heavily patroled areas and havent had a speeding ticket in years

#20 ·
He may not have meant to, but he was lieing. If its the old radio frequency radars, then if it's so much as pointed in your general direction, your detector will pick it up.

ps - no offense or anything, but I know plenty of people that seem "honest and nice" and are the worst bs'ers ever. Though, its likely he was just mis-informed.

I had a Whistler radar detector before my car got broken into... it worked for me! When driving from Humboldt to Sacramento or visa-versa there are alot of curvy fun roads, and I-5 is just one big flat strip.

I detected cops around corners and miles down a straight road. The only time I got a ticket with it was at the very top of a hill when a cop was comming from the other direction... nothing to reflect off of in the sky, so the detector didn't see him. I was going as fast as the other cars on the road, but I was in the passing lane so I got fucked.

I've never seen laser show up on my detector... and I'm sure glad.

I'm in the market for a new one so I've been looking at the above site. Very informative

But one thing thats better than a radar detector is a police radio scanner!

That is one of the dumbest things you can do...I believe they can throw you in jail and/or hit you with $1000+ fines...

in addition to what everyone has said........ just drive like a normal human being............ speeding is the number one causes of car accidents..... -> injuries -> paralization -> death........
Not necessarily true...

I read in the Detroit Free Press a few months back that the majority of accidents are caused by distractions and lack of driving experience, not speeding...

It's because they're immature children who still aren't able to admit thier mistakes. They dont just hand out speeding tickets for no reason...

I speed too. A lot more than I should. Normally I drive at least 15 over, if not more. I've been lucky as to not get pulled over in the past few years.

I've gotten 3 speeding tickets before in a 2-year period, and I suppose 1 I could say was a little unfair, but I can admit the fact that "Hey. I messed up and was speeding" I'm not going to be a baby and whine "OH what BS! WTF did I get a ticket for!?" You don't want to get a ticket kids? DON'T SPEED. otherwise, thats a risk you have to be willing to take.
Times two...I have been on the wrong side of the law on a few occasions, and the best thing to do is admit you were in the wrong. I got out of 100+ dollar impound fee, one misdemeanor, and literally destroying a set of tires, right in front of a deputy...The biggest mistake you can make is giving the officer attitude.

I will admit though that there are some asshole cops out there that will write bull [shizzle] tickets, however, they are in the vast minority.

Yeah, I've thought about getting one of those. Most places now cops use laser instead of radar because once you detect laser it's too late. I have mine, but I don't speed anymore so it's more just for fun. Plus, if it starts going off you can switch to your best behavior, even if you aren't speeding.

Heres, the thing with radar detectors...yea, when you hear it go off, it means that the cop is already clocking you or someone else (if there are other cars in front of you...the cop will most likely be checking them in advance)...so in that way, they can help you. Also, (I am an MP in the Reserves, so I can attest to this) in most cases, when a cop gets your speed, and you then see him or hear your detector go off, and you proceed to SLOW DOWN, they will let you go scott free. Like I said, in most cases. If police pulled over every speeder that they came across, they would go crazy and wouldnt have any time for responding to other calls. It depends a great deal on the mood of the officer(no doubt) and wether or not his prime purpose is to catch us lead foots.

Don't waste money on radar fuzzers or buster or the like. In most states, they are outlawed and the FCC has banned them. They are extremeley eratic at best, and like said before, fines are horrible!

Also, a lot more cops are using radar detector-detectors...so they can tell if you are using one. No word on wether they are harder on vehicles who they know are trying to slip through the system or not, just a random fact I guess.

As far as which radar detector to get, I would reccomend the Bel Vector 985 or 995. They are the best bang for your buck and have done very well in different tests and reviews. They do not quite meet the high end escorts or the valentine in performance, but they are your most cost-worthy unit, unless you have more money to blow. #1 thing to remember: don't get a detector and expect it to instantly make you invincible to police...you will not be...ever!:D

Radar/Laser Jammer

instead of wasting all that dough on something simple, get one of those 300-400 radar jammer's from the mag or look on internet.. they are all supposively illegal, but why do they sell them? I bought one a year ago and I fly on SR 71 NORTH like 85MPH. I had my brother test it out (which he is a deputy) and it fucked his readings up. he got readings of 500-700MPH. on 3 attempts. so that is your best bet dood.

I got a Beltronics RX65 i believe. The thing works charms. Ive read a state trooper from about a mile-mile and a half away. It reads any cop that got his/her radar on. But regardless of the kind of radar detector you got it still wont catch all cops, so you still got to drive resonably

Again, if you get caught with one of those fines are 4 digit fines, and you can lose your licence. In no state are they legal. there is a simple solution. Dont speed excesivly and dont speed on main roads. Know the area you are speeding in and dont go off doing like 50 in a 30. It's stupid and dangerous
