The screw you are referring to threads in to a plate inside the mirror which controls the amount of pressure required to move the mirror. Once you remove the screw, the plate fall free, and either rattles around insie, or lodges in a corner.
I made the same mistake removing a replacement from the local junkyard, and spent 20 minutes lining the plate back up with the hole. Good Luck!
