Generally, if you can't hear your turbo at all then it's probably ok bearing wise. (or seized which you would notice with poor performance) But also check for excessive oil in the hoses after the compressor housing, that would indicate bad oil seals. Our IHI turbos have a good bearing system which will outlast the oil seals (which actually look like little piston rings). That was the case for me, I just rebuilt my turbo, my bearings were good but I was leaking a lot of oil from both ends. From the looks of it, it was much worse on the exhaust side. Very cokey. Anyway, i ordered a rebuild kit from http://www.turbocity.com for $128.00 which seemed reasonable. Although a $74.00 Brokerage and taxes fee from UPS was a little unpleasant! ba$tards.
I can't really say how long it took because I just work on it when I have spare time, but set aside a least a whole day if you gotta keep her on the road.
