My 1996 mx6 idle's at 500-600 rpm...is this normal? Does it matter?

Also, I find it strange that my car is at 3000 rpm on the freeway (100km/h) in 5th gear? My cousin has a Z24 (2.4 L 4 cyclinder) and his is at 2000 and he also has a 2000 maxima (3.2 L V6) and that's at 1500.

if the RPM's are higher does this mean that the engine is working harder and burning more gas??
