It is easy to change the shifter bushings at the bottom of the shifter, and on the shift rod coming out of the tranny, but I noticed while under the car the other day that the front part of the linkage coming from the shifter has a pin, not a bolt, that retains the bushings.

Can this be easily pressed out, or is this area meant to not be serviced?

To replace the bushings under the shifter, all you do is undo the 3 screws holding the shield on. They may be rusted so have some PB handy. They are phillips head screws, but you can get them with a small socket if nothing else. Other than that, bring 2 12mm wrenches with you to undo the bolt. Then just remove the bolt and pop the old bushings out and put the new ones in. Reverse procedure.

As for the ones coming from the transmission, there is a bolt. Where the change rod pivots at the transmission end, there is a pin. But that bracket actualy bolts to the transmission. That bolt contains the bushings. What you have to do is use a 12mm to undo the nut. Then you have to undo the bolt from the bracket. It doesn't just come out. You have to unthread it. Then, remove old bushings, put new ones in. Reverse procedure.

As for the big bushing, not the cups, on tow cars now I havent been able to push it out with a thumb or screwdriver so I've just left it on. Also its on a stud with washers, but the nut is locked up on both cars so it came out like a bolt.

I was going to mention that, Dyoel. Good work. :tup: Mine was torn when I replaced it, though. So it came out effortlessly.

Hotrod...there is a thread in the projects section that should help you with part numbers and whatnot, if you need that information.

Thanks for the replies, but you guys still didn't get what I needed. Pointing me to the FAQ did help though, because I came across this post from Damian



The part I am talking about is right under the "Two here b001-46-062" looks like 40-060A or something. Notice how it has no bushings exploded from it in the diagram? Though there are two bushings in there. From this pic, it does look like this is purchased only as an assembly (Rod, bushings, and u-joint)

Here is an edit I did to the pic. The pin goes horizontaly and the bolt is vertical.


*Edit* I think I know what you're talking about!! The red bushings on the horizontal pin?? No, I do not believe those can be replaced. Sorry for the confusion man. It just dawned on me. Those shouldn't have to be replaced. Are you sure those are bad? The ones you need to replace are on the vertical bolt. Those 2 bushings are green.

No, they're not bad. Acctually that's why I brought this up. I noticed my other shifter bushings have play after only 8 months, but these have no play after 17. I might see how much that part is from Mazda, but this was mostly out of curiosity. Know what they're made out of? Or why they were designed as non-servicable but the others weren't?

Not much going on here so I feel like it is ok to bump a really old thread!

To replace all the shifter bushings even the one with a pin you have to grind one side off. I suggest the side that is flatter.
I believe you can use the same bushings in that location you just have to buy two more. Then you have to weld it back or find another way to put it back. I suggest welding it slowly with tacks till you get all the way around so you don't melt your new bushings.

I'm going a different route using TPU (rubbery stuff) and printing my own. I believe they will be better than stock. But that is to be seen.
If I remember or if there is interest I'll make a thread about it.
