I use to index my bikes plugs, but it's been a while & i can't remember 100% but I THINK the gap points to the exhaust side of the head ( I think it had more to do with the shape of the combustion chamber). There was a thread on this a little while ago but I couldn't find it, sorry. There was one in the 2nd gen forum that said exhaust side.

As for cleaning them..... do you mean the electrode ? I use a little bit of fine wet & dry sandpaper and a lot of compressed air (as you don't want any abrasive in the bore ;) ) or do you mean the porcelin (white) part ?I just wipe it clean with a rag.

Clarification needed for the indexing question.

Woo was refering the index post for 1st gens. so this may not apply to 2nd gens.
I remember him writing that the hook part on the plug should point up. To get them in the right position, you may have to take them in and out a few times so they all face up.
I drew a line on my socket piece to indicate that the plug is hooking up.
Hope that helps.

When Indexing plugs it is generallly found that if the gap is pointed towards the intake valves it will generate a couple of HP more then pointed toward the exhaust valves.
with the 3 valve head you IMO would want to point it right in the middle towards the bit between both intake valves.
on a 16 valve head you migt as well do the same between the two intake valves.
I know on VN headed V8's they find best pointed on chambe side of the intake valve not the exhaust side of the intake valve for best results. It's said that this is where most of the fuel mix enters. Apparently it saw 6Hp at rear wheels on this Torana but that could have just been from leetign the car cool ETC. but It is well know to provide a sweeter burn.
