Well, lately my car wont start on the first few turns of the key. Its kinda hard to explain. I will turn the key and nothing will happen. All the lights will come on and the car is fully powered but it doesnt turn over at all. It doesn't even try. I thought it was the starter but after replacing that it still does it. Sometimes it works on first try but others it takes a few trys at it. Any ideas?

do you have atx or mtx? cause when i had the atx...the wire harness for it, under the battery tray. I would jiggle that and then it would start right up... I had the same problem as you. IF you have atx...try it...if not, then i dunno man. Im having trouble starting my car as well.....i just pretty much got finished with the mtx conversion. It will start, but i get a CEL and it would die. Vacuum hoses are on. So i dunno..ill have to get around to checking it out. Hope you find your problem man.

my connector got worn on end of auto shifter cable where it connected to top of transaxle lever so would not correctly position trans. in park. i beleive the red P light was funky also-was a few years ago.
have someone push lever on top of transaxle when you are trying to start-forward or is it backwards, not sure.

also try starting in neutral, also.

other ideas are inhibitor switch or ignition switch.

I have an MTX and does the same thing. I checked everything, and no problems are found. It seems to get worse after the car is warmed up, sometimes it wont start at all. The thing that throws me is that my voltage guage drops to cranking voltage, even though its not cranking. And I can hear the fuel pump kick on during start like it should. Two starters did the same thing!! Another weird thing is that if I put a jump start on it, making the available voltage in the 14 volt range, it will start right up. Any suggestions?

consider a bad selenoid on starter if this is a nostart while engine is warm. my car would not start while warm and i got no sound from selenoid gear. the headlights would stay bright while system would make no sound-open circuit.
yet it would start fine cold;an intermittant problem.
if selenoid clicks suspect starter brushes.
also consider neutral/inhibitor switch and ign. switch.
haynes has a jumper lead test for selenoid.
people on this forum have discussed a voltage test at the selenoid. search may turn this up.
if i had just installed a starter/selenoid i would do more testing before pulling it again, it was more work than i expected going in.
my reman. starter/selenoid starts car fine now every time.

Well its not that its not fully in park. My lx had that problem, I tried all the tircks that worked on the lx but nothing worked. Its not the silinoid because the starter i bought had a new one on it. I am still able to drive my car but sometimes it takes a couple turns of the key. Just a little thing than needs to be fixed before its a big thing.

My car, an '88 MTX, did this exact same thing. Replaced my starter and it has never done it again.

starting problems

Check the electrical & safety interlocks. Perhaps try cleaning and retighten. A schematic might help. If this doesn't help, have the alternator & starter tested. Maybe you have a drain on your charging system, not allowing peak starting amps from the battery.

The Starter is brand new. Thats what i thought it was originally because we could tap the old starter and it would start right up. But then we replaced it with a new one and it started on first rip. But I turned it off and then it took a few turns of the key to get it started again. I think its a connection, a wire, something near the starter.
