The actual alignment or positioning of the woofers in/on the box makes little difference most of the time. In a setup like that, you're losing a lot of airspace to the center area. If you have the room to pull it off, great - it'll look good to be sure.
For info on different box types and applications, read the "subwoofers and enclosures 101" thread. As for whether or not your design will work - no reason it wont, provided you have the room with proper airspace.
