Temp Gaugue

684 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  NickR
My car isn't overheating but my gauge fluxuates like crazy, for the most part, it sits in the middle, but sometimes it floates up near the red, i would say 85-90% to the right, then it drops below 1/2 way then goes to halfway, then repeats the process. The coolant levels are good. Any suggestions, or is this a simple sensor malfunction. I've pulled over while the gauge was supposedly reading "hot" and the engine was most certainly not overheating, I went back into the car to see that the gauge had returned to the middle

It's most likely a bad sensor but wire connectors could also be loose or oxydized.
Thats what I was thinking, Thanks man.
Or, it could be air bubbles in the coolant; when the engine is cold, open the coolant filler cap (next to the oil dipstick) and check it is full to the brim.

Or, it could be a sticking thermostat.

Or, it might be that the fans are malfunctioning intermittently, possibly due to a bad coolant temp sensor.

Or, it could be.... lol thanks for the input, i will look into all the possibilites once this monsoon stops out here!!
Check for the thermostat is seeing if the upper radiator hose is hot when the car is at normal operating temperature. I forgot the voltage for the coolant temperature sensor, but I swapped mine around to make sure they were working. that might not work for you since the notches are different for the sensor that tells the ECU about fuel delivery and the one for the instrument panel.
