I have a 88 mazda mx6 4cyl. automatic trans.the car starts and runs fine,but when you put it in drive it kills the engine.Can put it in reverse and it runs fine can backup anywhere you want to go.Have checked switchs in shifter they are fine,took the elctronic switch off on the top of the trans and likage off and put it into drive with vise grips same thing.Put it back together jacked car up and put it in drive without the brake on and does fine shifts good apply the brake and it kills the engine,try and hold the gas down and apply the brake and it still kills the engine.Any help would really great.

A lot of people who own auto. mx6's have problems with their transmissions... not all but most do. Knowing that u have a 4 cyl..... doesn't help the situation any better. If i were you, i would try to get a manual transmission, and maybe try to engine swap.
