I am a novice at transmissions. Do they have electrical solenoids that wear out and need to be replaced....similar to the solenoids for the fuel pressure relief and VRIS ? If so, where are they located, and is there access from the outside ?

My auto transmissio works well, but once every few months, it will shift down to 3rd or 2nd gear while I am on the road, and the HOLD light comes on. It continues stuck in these gears until I come to a complete stop. Then moving again, everything is normal again. I was trying to figure out when this occurs. It seems to happen when the car is moving, no foot on the gas, and then when I feed it just very light gas pedal pressure. But only about 1 time every 3 months.

can't access it external, you have to drop the tranny, crack it open and rebuild

Everything is good, hopefully it will be another few months before this happens again. Transmission is good, no slippage in any gear, just this odd event. Eventually transmissions do wear out. What are the choices these days if you need a replacement ? I see some news ones advertised that are supposed to be able to go with the MX-6. Are there really new ones you can buy that will work with the car ?

no one rebuilds autos for cheap. do a mtx swap and be done - it is pretty easy

I've never had this happen to me, sounds very odd. Maybe it was something with your differential? Sometimes the gearbox likes to downshift at stupid times. Or maybe you hit the kickdown switch?
Were you in the process of turning when this happenened?
Also, it can't hurt to get it looked at.

You don't get a new transmission with a car this old. You pay 3K+ for a rebuild. start saving your pennies

There is no gear slippage in daily driving, and this gear change that happens every few months is just like pressing the HOLD button, and locking the transmission in a lower gear. So I am guessing it is something to do with the HOLD equipment. Hopefully the transmission will not wear out anytime soon. It's mainly just a shock when you are driving along and all of a sudden you are locked in a lower gear at a much higher RPM until you stop the car.
