I am having a problem of what I think is a valve tap. Whenver I first start moving the engine will not tap. If I sit in traffic for awhile the engine will tap quietly. If I drive a long distance on the interstate around 100 miles or so, whenever I am done driving my car sounds like a diesel when sitting still because tapping is so loud, also whenever I start moving the tap can be heard coming from the exhaust pipe also. It just sounds really bad and embarassing. If I turn my car off for an hour or so the tap will go away. Can somebody help me figure out what this is! I drive the 93 I4 manual.

Interesting, usually HLA ticking is heard at startup and then goes away.

Double check your oil level. Does it quiet down or go away after an oil change? What weight oil are you using? It sounds like maybe its too thin and is not having enough oil pressure after warm up.

10w30 is fine, maybe use a 5w30 for winter to help with cold starts. Since it goes away after an oil change, your oil is getting too dirty too fast - not catastrophic, but enough to cause lifter tick. You may want to try a *safe* engine flush, such as Auto-RX (read about it here or on bobistheoilguy.com first for more info) or for a quicker flush try Rislone for about 700-1000 miles before your next change (i.e. put it in at 2000-2300 miles on your current oil if you do 3k mile changes). I do not recommend a 15min flush, as it contains kerosene which is not meant to be an engine lubricant and a quickie flush can loosen large particles which may clog oil passages or the pickup screen.
