Hi Gang,

I'm trying to get an idea of the gears (man trans) that 2nd gen owners do 60 in. I'm currently running in 5th, as the car seems ok like that and my fuel economy is a heap better, but concerned about the additional load on the box.

So What do you use?

Man i wouldnt worry about the load on the engine i take off in second sometimes, ahh love the torque :), i go around round-a-bouts in fith and she dosent mind one bit, no stuttering like you would get from a four...

My mate hates me for it, says i dont deserve a manual, i should drive an auto.

I tend to go over the limit (60) if I put it in fifth ;) , but mostly if its on a flat surface I'll leave it in fifth and if it gets a bit hilly I put it in 4th just for convienience.

I might drive an auto
but let me tell you it ****s me in some cars being in 3rd doing 60ks I mena even 4th at 80ks is bad if your not going hard.
I can't stand it. I hated it in Astina which only had a canon on it's rear but it echoed it's arse off.

Low626 style is the right way. Mind you not all 4's stutter when driven high I know Type-R's almost stall, but I do remember driving a N/A Telstar plently of torque for 5th gear roundabouts but the best corrolla with 4AGZE the supercharger mean most hills in 5th you could do, when he did the conversion amazingly his GTI saw less speeding fines - NO Bull.

where you do have to watch is where you have added no factory load massive 18inch chrome wheels for example can make a difference.
but the Box won't care but your fuel bill will.

A problem that you may not realise is fouling of the plugs and surrounding areas due to too low rpm - carbon deposits. You may be experiencing a false economy where you save on fuel, but after a while you don't run as well - and have to service more often. (and probably get worse economy)

My GSR has slightly short gearing, but if I use 5th doing 60, I won't force it up a slope, so slip to 4th if any marginal effort is required. I won't labour the engine at too low rpm, but generally use hughest gear possible when crusing, and skip gears all the time. I guess you just have to watch it if the rpm goes down to much below 2k rpm - which is my guess as to where it is.

I generally keep it above 2000rpm unless like its the speed limit of 60 then i pop it into 5th :) or when im cruising around the streets (50km/h) i use 4th.. while my mate uses 2nd and screams the head of his bluey...lol

Yeah - on that, at 60 in 5th I'm at 1900rpm, in 4th I'm at 2200. Is that sort of what you're getting?

Well it might apply to Mitsubishis but does not effect my Mazda's
Both run at 60km/h in top gear Auto locked up 1400rpm in the Wagon and 1600rpm in my Mx-6. light throttle, never had fouled plugs never had any problem with carbon deposits.
The car was desgined to run locked up at 60k's at that speed, never had fouled plugs, even my mates 202 in his Kingswood could pull top gear 3rd with 2.7 diff ratio, the engine coudl roll at 1200rpm in traffic up to 60k's no problem never fouled plugs.

I know some cars will get carbon deposits, I've seen many an older man or womans car pump it out the rear but jsut a qucik open throttle solves the exhasut build up. But mostly on Toyotas Mistubishis, nissans but never a F2 or even any 626. Found one GE 626 sedan 160,000k's old man quitest motor I have ever heard, The owner skips gears even. Has only replaced 4 sets of spark plugs he rekons and pads.

Cool, I think it only happens when you go really low, like when you herar the car make that clunking noise when people try to go around a slow corner 5th (doing like 600 rpm!) I imagine anything over 1500 is cool.
cheers!

yeah but anything below 1000rpm is stupid unless it's a desiel.

I mean my idel is at 900rpm so no way it's going lower.
In most case when I drive a manual it's in the mid-range, I can be so lazy, I had this hire car it was new ZR celica manual too, It drove around on red-line. I was in 1st gear in traffic never even shifted to second when doing 40's, outside school zone's bouncing off the rev limiter.

Wow wagon can do 67-70 km/h if taken to the limiter.

My mate Monaro 355 does 120km/h in first gear Eat that. and it gets to in it in no time at all. wheel spin and all.
