A smaller offset will let you fit a wider rim. Remember that if you go to far you start to affect the car's hamdling characteristics though. not to mention that you can start to look ike a low rider. Other things to consider is that with a wider tire you will have more tendancy to aqua plan in the rain and you are putting more drag resistance between the tire and the road. I normally wouldn't recommend more than a 215 width tire for our cars unless you really want a lot of lateral grip for auto-x. Beyond that you start to actually lose power from the extra drag and you get more wandering with the lines in the road.
