Ok, I'm getting the ****s with this annoying noise I have. It sounds like it is coming from the front right hand wheel. I've narrowed the following info down.

- It only happens while moving... not just revving the engine.
- It sounds like a grinding noise... metal on metal.
- It happens in all gears.
- It happens going forward, backwards and turning corners.
- Grinding increases with speed, not RPM.
- It is not the CV's

Ok, here is what I have done so far....

- The exhaust is completely clear of everthing (over an inch) and is very well supported... it is only 3 months old.
- All the belts etc are clear.
- There is nothing lose in the steering or drive train.
- The tyre is on properly.

Here is the thing, I think it is that stupid ABS sensor on the cog of the drive train. I took it off and gave it a clean and it seemed to make a little (not much) difference. I thought it was a little cog in a big one at first, but it isn't! It seems to be a magnetic sensor that just sits above the cog and picks it up the larger cogs movement.

Now, I don't know how to take it off, or move it so that I can test drive without it. Has anyone else had a problem with this thing? Or do you think it might be something else? Do these need to touch the cog to work? If I don't I might lift it up off the cog with some washers.

Could it be worn brake pads? - or maybe a bit of cr*p lodged btwn the pad and the disk.

My grans car did this and is sounded awful, just grinding away. I think we endend up having the pads changed, cos they got damaged. Jack ur car up and rotate the trye where the noise comes from - it may be easier to detect the location: you could also use the screwdriver-to-the-ear trick.
Goodluck!

Sounds very much like a wheel bearing like mine did, except to get mine out of the hub they had to use a 20 ton press..... check ya bearing to make sure its not hammered

From what you describe, the noise is exactly what I had a while ago (on fixed it a few days ago to!)...

Its the bushes at the top of your strut. They wear out, and you get the shock rubbing on the mounts.

Not a hard fix, but the wheel has to come off to give you the room to drop the strut down an inch or two out the way to work.

You might need those fingers back, DOZE...

They would be handy plugging up all the leaks from your engine, ha.

Well, I don't think I will be doing it today... besides the fact that it is raining I won't be able to get the replacement part since Mazda isn't open today... and by the sounds of it I have to go genuine parts.

The worn shocker mounts were a prob on my aunt's bmw, u could tell this was the problem cos the sound went away when you were on a REALLY smooth bit of road.

Problem is that it was described as "A grinding noise - metal on metal" This could really only be brake issue, or a bearing issue. Suspension would not grind, and it would not be consistent with speed. Only things that rotate will "grind". If it is not the brakes, and is not the bearings, then maybe cv, then try gearbox. I would have to definately rule out anything to do with suspension because of the way in which it was originally described.

AHHHH!

Well, I just spent the last hour at a suspension shop only to be told...

They have no bloody idea! But it definately isn't suspension related, or the CV's. The only thing they found was slightly worn bushes in one of the control arm... but nothing that would make the noise I was talking about.

Even the engine mounts where checked, which where fine. The place was really good, checked everything and they have no clue.

So, I'm just going to keep driving it until it smashes now.

Cam22t describes it as a chattering sound? Any expansion on that. Only thing that comes to mind is the ching-ching noise mine makes around right hand corners and during sudden acceleration.

My problem is the cog for the ABS, its loose and slides outwards towards the wheel can can spin freely in that postion. I dont know how they are actually supposed to remain attached, but they dont bloody seem to.

If you had a severely stuffed CV's, then it would sound like that, but in a different spot and vibrates alot more. I'm just going to wait for it to completely smash so I can go, oh... thats it. Or I've been told it might be the throw out bearing... but it is wierd as I thought it would do it all the time if it was.

For the ABS there is a big COG on the drivetrain and the reader which is a little 2 prong sensor that sits just above the big cog and is magnetic so it picks up the cog moving past...it doesn't actually sit in it at all.
