ZE valvetrain tick..help

706 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  thingsthatfly2
So i was racing a dirtbike on the street and pulling pretty decently on him in 2nd after i could actually get traction and as i go to shift into 3rd, the clutch doesn't fully disengage (needed bleeding/pedal adjustment) so it wouldn't go into gear. I was still in the gas to make a powershift and apparently i have no rev limiter... the tach went to about 8300 rpm (light flywheel..revs fast >_<) and i let off. but promptly afterwards it decided to tick from the back head. it definitely sounds like a valve tick just behind the IM.

can anyone help me out on what exactly the tick could be from? as in lifter or retainer or something on that order?

Also, I added Lucas oil stabilizer to try and get it to quiet down some but it didn't help at all. It isn't a very LOUD tick but its noticable with the hood up or just sitting there revved up a little bit. its pretty hard to hear at idle.

so if there could be a fairly easy fix (Easy being just pulling IM and rear VC to swap something) and if that something easy is the same in ZE as is in DE that'd be baller.

thanks,
Joey

it sounds like the lifter tick that most people on this forum have, you can replace the lifters to make it go away but if you can live with it, it wont hurt your car. try a product called seafoam, it made my lifter tick much quieter.
Well about 10 minutes ago i revved it a lil high, not quite as high as before but near redline and now it sounds like it droped a valve. I cant get it to run but i have to keep it reved up and is missing bad.

My main question now is to pull the rear head off, do I have to drop the motor or can i just unbolt the rear head and pull it out while its in the car?

You can take off the rear head with the motor in. It's not gonna be a cakewalk though. It's a royal pita to work on the rear head with the motor in, but totally do-able...

Ok, thanks! This is my 3rd ZE and i'm not gonna dole out another $800 for a 4th. the sad thing is that this motor only has like 40k miles on it :(
if your tach is anywhere near accurate...heck if you're going anywhere over 7grand with a stock ze valve train its no surprise you're going through ze's....you'd think you'd learn.

You'll be blowing upper retainers all over the road at those rpm's. I have a light flywheel as well and in second or third, there is no excuse to 'accidentally' rev that high unless you're really not paying attention to you're rev's and you're completely deaf...even at 7 grand you can hear these motors struggling. On top of that you're making about 4.69 horsepower if you take it up to 8300...so you actually making the car a LOT slower than it should be...

The reason you don't have a rev limiter is because, if you're running your ze properly i.e. with a chipped ecu, the chip takes out the rev limiter. (i'm assuming you're running a probinator chipped ecu)

I don't think the number of motors you've blown (most likely out of your own stupidity) is something to brag about...in fact its something i would keep secret...there is no reason to go through that many motors...unless you're doing something seriously wrong....like over-revving

My advice, Don't run it anymore and pull the rear valve cover to see which retainer has been destroyed. You might still be able to save the motor but i doubt it

lol.. maybe its cuz mazda FWD motors can't handle any abuse whatsoever. aka - a bunch of daily drivers not worth doing anything to? GG

I like to have fun. fun is not cheap. thats why i'm ditching the FWD for a RWD and will be faster, handle better, launch better, and ability to go sideways ;) RX7 w/o rotary.

and the reason i overrevved it is cuz the clutch master cylinder is going out so the clutch didn't fully disengage. i tried putting in gear really fast but it didn't go in. so i pretty much just tapped the gas but it still doesn't matter with light flywheel, it revved the crap outta it. i shut it off immediately so it shouldn't have done too much harm.

hmm i've had a lot of fun with mine and i've put about 100k miles on it over 8 years. there's driving hard and then there is abuse.

take any car and abuse it and it won't last...i don't care what you drive

do me a favor. wait 10 years and come back and re-read your posts and tell me you still think the same way.... i think by then you'll realize you can't abuse any FWD, RWD, AWD car of any make without it becoming 'expensive'

I have a lot of fun and the only thing it costs me is gas.

But this isn't a pissing contest about how to drive a car hard without killing it...you'll learn that or go broke not learning ;)

hows the tick coming along?
Well I've bought all the gaskets that I'll need to put it back together and have removed all the hoses/wires and everything. Now I'm just waiting for one of my buddies to help me out on getting the head out. it is a pita trying to do it solo hahahaha

and yeah i did abuse this car. a little bit of power + quite a bit of nitrous...oops. but my next car is gonna be built quite a bit stronger than i did this one. hopefully the only thing i'll need to replace frequently on that car is gonna be tires ;)

a rx7 without a rotary is like a girlfriend without a vagina and boobs. and ass.. and face...
good luck with the swap btw and take pics :D
