Hi I am driving a ford spectron 4x4 19986 carbi engine van it has an pretty lame 2l FE mazda engine in it. But i love the fact that it is 4x4 great for camping etc.

I am wondering if i can do anything to make the engine i bit more powerful. (I am not very technical minded) As i understand the f2 engine will bold strait in. As i put the tranny cylinders etc from the f2 and the head of the fe will there be a bit more torque and power in the van? this way i can keep the manifolds the same and do not have to modify parts.:)

Any suggestion are welcome

I know of a guy who fitted an FE-T from the 86 tx5 turbo, but those engines are getting very rare, not to mention the issues with the ECU etc.

the F2t on the other hand doesnt lend itself all that well to RWD, although the later model (2000+) E2000i models had a 12v head for RWD, so you could adapt it, nothing is easy.

You could look at a sportage engine and add a turbo to that.......how much do you want to spend.

cheapest easiest way of going better I can see is a F2 bottom end - a reground cam - maybe ? and a webber or similar uprated carb.

give you more torque across the range. but not enough to damage anything.

tanks for reply, chieftool l about 800 max, your suggestion sounds like it is gonna cost more ) :. I like the sound of your suggestion rodhog. I have been looking into new carbs for the van. came across an 32/36 Weber carb adapted to fit for 600. dos anybody have experience with an carb upgrade is it worth it? The engine mostly lets me down on hills 70/80 on big hills
will the lower end of f2 just bolt up or do i have to adapt parts, i believe the block of the f2 is a bit higher?
thanks

Going from Carb to injection is always going to be a bit of a hassle and involve a bit of coin. And any Turbo upgrade on a Carby car is going to be a hassle too.

Upgrade to a Webber, and if tuned well and jetted appropriately it'll give you a good improvement, the trade off is a bit more fuel usage.
The main problem I find with Carby's is finding someone competent enough to tune them properly.
In a van you're always going to have space constraints, without seeing how it sits in there its going to be hard for us to tell.

Mate I'd love to see pics of the Van. It reminds me of the Kombi, big and slow, but great off road and fantastic for camping.

hmmm, ok.....youre going to want the B2200 F2 8valve motor, or at least the block from one.

The F2 will give you a little over 10% more torque, you might be able to squeeze a bit more from a carb and extractors.

IMO the carb probably isnt worth the cost for the $ considering you have 800 to spend.
I saw a set of extractors on ebay for 150 (I think)

A cam isnt worth doing as you probably dont want to lift the torque any higher in the rev range than it already is.

A carb cam and extractors plus the extra capacity may net you a 15-20% torque increase.

unfortunately the turbo option is much better but its alot more work and cost.

by a (new) carb cam, u mean one that is polished or bigger or? With new extractors do i need to pimp up my whole exhaust system or? Will extractors alone make a noticeable difference? How much ours of labour dos it take to install, or is it a easy job, any welding involved ( sorry for possibly stupid questions) much appreciated. My wife has the van to work, so cant take pictures, thanks for the help so far. Sounds like an awesome project making the fe sohc a dohc+ turbo , Its something that's on my list grinn

keep your eyes open on E-bay both here and US or other OS places. I did see some time back for a FE manifold for after market carby. And I remember seeing a adaptor plate for webber.

I am going more towards getting an holden v6 conversion, dos anybody have the dimensions of an holden 3,8l engine. I know v6 conversion sels an conversion kit, only the 4wd has an frontwheel dif an frontaxle not sure if it has enough clearing...

dos anybody know if people have put v6 eninges as replacement of the old fe 2,l carbi engine???

i just did a rebuild but i had problems every step of the way coz of a bad mechanic, ( took 7 months to rebuild it, promised me 1 month, put the wrong head gasket on and covered a water hole in the process.. I also found out later he didn't replace the rear main seal or the engine mounts, so they both need fixing before I can re-register the car, then just have to upgrade the brakes, replace the suspension ( mines fucked) and then I have to work out how to rewire to get my digi dash working...

get a simple strong engine for your van..
I'd go a ford 4.0l over the ecotec, i know it makes less power but its gonna be cheap and easy and still powerful..

I dunno there would be room for the straight 6 in the bay of a spectron.

I am not sure the commodore v6 will fit either but I have a vague recollection that its been done before.

I would stick to a better 4 cylinder....I am not sure whether you would call a Mazda G6 better, but it does have more capacity....maybe something non mazda like a 2.7 hilux motor....a 3RZ or 2TR
Or even a Kia J3 diesel from a K2900 (or a Hyundai Terracan)

the commodore conversion is probably the cheapest if you can get it to fit....but its still not going to be all that cheap.

yeah, and i've seen them put into vans before, but theyre not big on low down torque...not without a turbo anyway, so theyre not all that well suited as a lugger.

Its probably still easier to look at the FE turbo and F2 turbo options before doing a swap to any other sort of motor, from a cost and ease of fitment point of view.

yeah fe turbo sounds pretty good, but i think most of them died ages ago, i recently saw a good looking f2 turbo, but i am not shore that will fit either, the transmission will but would the turbo and bold on etc fit in that limited space? + these engines are about 20 years old. I did a bit research about rotarys but they seems to be pretty unriliant after 100000 k, + much maintenance

this is what you need : http://www.mx6.com/forums/1g-mx6-forced-induction/242423-f2t-b2200.html

The F2T normally doesnt lend itself well to RWD applications unless you do it this way.

basically building a hybrid F2T using parts from the Mx6 motor and the 12v FE motor from the E2000i

I would expect it to go as well as the factory F2T.....you might need to get creative with the intercooler plumbing....a water to air setup from an early subaru liberty turbo might make the piping easier.

Wow. That dos look awesome, but also hard to reproduce. My best bed is i think to get an 3.6 l commodore engine, with adjusted sump for extra clearance, get an custom adapter plate made to fit the ford(mazda) gearbox. I hope the engine size ( length ) is similar ( like to hear opinions about it).

The problem i run in then is the gear ratio, the gears are close to each other what means lots of revving, is there a " cheap " solution to this??

cheers
