Well, here it is. My 88 626 is really just a glorified test mule for whatever I can think up. This is the latest project. The turbo is from a 6.0L Ford Powerstroke diesel engine. I am a Ford technician, so they are easy to come by. The turbo features VGT(Variable Geometry Turbine) technology. If you don't know what that is, get on youtube and search.

The point of this exercise is not to make 600whp as the turbo is likely capable, but just to see how well it works. I am using MS2Extra for engine managemnet and using the boost controller to control the turbo. There are still a few bugs in that scheme that I am working on. I will be adding a wastegat as a pecautionary measure this weekend. With the controls the way they are now I can start making boost around 2000rpms in 2nd gear and at about 3000 rpms it goes up past 12 psi, where MS is currently tuned for. I will update here as I learn more. Heres some pics, enjoy:

THis is the pipe connecting the manifold to the turbine inlet. Im adding a wastegate soon.

Nice, now thats thinking outside the box!

How about some measurments of the turbine wheel and compressor?

Here you go. some other info too:

vane position(DC%) Apms
0 0-.4
10 .45
20 .5
30 .55
40 .65
50 .725
60 .8
70 .95
80 1.1
90 1.3
100 1.5

On a Ford truck, It will never run more than 85% DC. I'm not sure if the solenoid will kill itself past that or what the reason is. I am hoping to get some more information from deeper inside Ford/Garrett/International/Navistar soon.

Here are some basic specs if you dont have them already:

Turbine
Inducer: 72.25mm 2.84in
Exducer: 66.45mm 2.62in
.9 A/R

Compressor
Exducer: 81.55mm 3.21in
Inducer: 58.00m 2.28in
.58 A/R

nice placement

How are you going to control the vane? on my holset, the actuator was removed and I'm using a heavy duty spring holding the vane closed. are you going to be using MS to control it or the GM boost sensor?

I am using MS to control the boost. Yesterday I added a wastegate into the system. The solenoid is on the turbo on the CHRA. it uses oil pressure to move an arm attached to the vanes. I know another guy who has a HE351VE who is using a 14b wastegate actuator to open the vanes and then an external to ultimately control the boost. he has an Eagle Talon also on MS. I have suggested to him to try and use some other PWM solenoid with Megasquirt for controls, such as an EGR valve. I may experiment with this myself in the future...

Thats what im talking about, someone who is not afraid to try new things and did it without asking crazy question. i also like the approach you followed. looks greak man

Well as an update, I installed some 40#(420cc) injectors last night and was hoping to boost this thing more than 10psi. Found out that at about 17-18 psi Im running out of (stock)fuel pump. Then was going to make some 13-15 psi pulls and one of my [fizzle]ing spark plug wires fell off the distributer cap. I thought it something slightly more interesting and just limped the car home. That pretty much ended the night. It started snowing too, so not the greatest time for high boost tuning. :p

O, I installed a 38mm WG and am using that with a manual boost controller to ultimately control the boost. Without more sophistocated controls I just dont think its possible and Im not much of an electronics/computer nerd yet, so.......

I also have another question: what is the farthest anyone has pushed this engine before it breaking? I still have a stock clutch and I'm probably knocking on 280-300whp so I am wondering if the clutch or the engine will die first?

#14 ·
Damn. My tuning is good, but I was hoping to lift the cylinder head off this engine before the clutch gives out. Whatever breaks, it wil probably be the end of this car. I think I am just going to part it out or sell it and wait patiently for my EVO

Well, either way I am going to push it furthur, keep adding fuel until something gives. I will probably take it easy for awhile until I get the turbo oil drian figured out. cannot get it to not leak:eek:.

as an observance, I was running 18+psi on my TO4E on the stock clutch with over 100k miles on it, and it held fine. Without the nasty torque spike like the stock/tbird turbo has, a new stocker with maybe a ACT pressure plate would be fine. You can get more if you need more...but probably not necessary. I'm going to go overboard with mine and getting a 6 puck :)

Stock fuel pressure. ~42psi. Your probably right. I'm likely at about 230-240 whp. I MEANT to say (crank)hp before. The 660s are going in as soon as I have time to get the oil drain sorted out...and the weather improves.

Heres another question: shouldnt the fuel pressure regualtor raise fuel pressure at a 1:1 ratio as boost increases? mine holds 42 psi no matter what the manifold pressure is.

As for the clutch, if it goes , it goes, I can't waste any more money on this car.

I probably will get the 4 bar MAP sensor. My real one true goal here is to control this turbo well enough to basically use MS as a boost controller with this turbo on an EVO and let the EMS be seperate, probably have Buschur tune it.

PFFFT Sabbai has run 170.5kw atw (228.6hp) on a totally stock fuel system.

With a Woo's modded ECU of course!

No idea of A/F ratio though but the power curve was nice and there was no detonation.

:(well it would appear that I am going to be parting this car out sooner than expected.:( If anyone is intersted in parts/setups let me know. Expect a for sale thread by tomorrow.:(

#22 ·
We just found out my wife is expecting. She hates the car as I spend alot of free time tinkering with it and doesnt trust it to carry our child around. Plus I promised her I would get rid of it as soon as we found out. I didn't think it would be until later this year since we just started 'trying'. Got it on the first shot though.

So everything is for sale.

Yeah, but the sooner I get rid of this car/stuff, the sooner I get to buy my dream car(EVO 9 MR). This car was an ever-evolving project/experiment. Now its over. Gotta move on to the next chapter.

I do want to express the HUGE gratitude that I have for all who have helped me along the way.

Heres the thread. I really hope someone wants the GT3782VA and can continue with the VGT tomfoolery.

Pics or ban!

The last mod i said that to banned me! I laughed and laughed.

I thought you said you had an he351cw ? I'm sure you did. You never mentioned v.

mixed up, it's the 351ve ;)

it's a heavy duty spring holding the vane closed. I'll be posting pics soon once I start on the engine bay. I'm working on suspension bits now.
